 Buffalo Stampede 2017

The 4th edition of the Buffalo Stampede Ultra Skyrun  started in its customary location of Howitt Park on the banks of the Ovens River in the centre of Bright, Victoria. 4 races over the three days took runners over Mystic & Clear Spot mountains and for those runners opting for the longer distances Mount Buffalo was also included. The finial race was new for 2017 with it starting on the summit of Buffalo and a battle of attrition all the way into Bright.

Day 1 La Sportiva Clearspot Carnage: SkySprint Bright – Clearspot – Bright

This year’s SkySprint saw a new course which had runners turning around at the summit of Clearspot. No easier than other years as the shorter distance made for tighter faster racing as the field moved out of Bright and onto the first climb of Mystic and then off the back descending Mick’s Track and then the KOM Clearspot climb! There was no rest as they turned at the summit to smash down a brutal descent before having nothing in the tank to climb back up onto Mystic and then off the launch pad into the valley along the yellow brick road to the end in Bright! 20km of hard running….

Day 2 Ultra SkyMarathon Bright – Buffalo – Bright

Would the record fall? The mark set in the premier event by America Dakota Jones of 7h 48m 03s was up for grabs! The Ultra has crushed many runners and only the strong return to slops of Buffalo to conqueror its climbs on the Stampede weekend. It is a battle of attrition, go out too hard and pay for it later when the sun comes out and cooks the field, go too easy and be left in everyone’s dust and never catch up…The Buffalo Stampede isn’t about the scenery, its a race against some of the toughest minded trail athletes this side of the planet…

Day 3 SkyMarathon Buffalo – Bright

What a race! The escapees being hunted down by the pack… With the Marathon starting at the summit of Buffalo and finishing in Bright the scene was set for a quick race where those downhill specialist would be full gas to get an advantage and try and hold off from the steady speedy tempo demons as they swept up the field! The racing was exciting for both the Women & the Men fields, what a way to complete a truly iconic Australian Skyrunning Championships.
